Fix-It Familia is the story of Chavo and his family. They live and work in L.A. Every morning Chavo’s parents get up early and head out to help others. They can fix anything, and on Saturdays Chavo gets to ride along.
“It’s a family affair. We’re the Fix-It Familia. We can help anywhere.” This book is full of rhyme, written by Lucky Diaz, a Latin Grammy winner. Lucky is the author of Paletero Man and La Guitarrista. You can also find a “Fix-It Familia” song at https://soundcloud.com/luckydiaz/fix_it
Micah Player. illustrator of Paletero Man, creates fun, expressive illustrations again in Fix-It Familia. The text is sprinkled with just enough Spanish vocabulary to completely follow the story while discerning cues to learn new words.
I appreciated the author’s note from Lucky Diaz.
“If you’re a first-generation Mexican American like me, chances are you grew up working with, or for, your family. My father used hammers and tools to fix and create. But I was different, an artist , a day dreamer, creating and drawing in my notebook. Like my father’s tools, my ideas and imagination fix and find solutions. Ideas and dreams are powerful and real. We each bring something special to life, and when we bring those special ideas and talents together, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish.”
I think this will be an awesome read aloud for our Arcadia community. There are many themes we can explore in this enjoyable, upbeat book.
