Rougarou Magic

Written by Rachel M. Marsh

I found this book intriguing because of its uncommon inclusion of the French-Cajun culture which is centered in the Louisiana bayou of the United States. This is an account of a girl, Feliciana, who experienced her first ten years of life in the bayou, then was transplanted to the New England town of Boston when her mom decided to remarry. The struggle of adjusting to a new and different family situation, school and community is the overall theme developed in this story while peppered with samplings of the French-Cajun language, food, traditions and folklore. I liked learning about this unique culture that comes from a rich generational heritage, including a touch of superstition and mythical creatures at the heart of their folklore.

The story is a relatable heart-warming reminder about being comfortable with who you are when you feel different from everyone around you.
