As a companion to The Last Wild this book continues the story of a world where animals no longer exist. Kester Jaynes, who does not speak, discovers he can communicate with the few animals who did survive the “red-eye” virus and the human culling. He now discovers animals who live deep underground and must stop them from rising up against their human “enemies” who exiled, murdered and stole everything from them. In the first book he had to save the animals, now he must save the humans from the angry animals. Together these books should hold the interest of those 4th through 6th grade readers who are looking for an animal adventure and fantasy and have them anxiously awaiting the third installment of this exciting trilogy. I would recommend this book to those who really enjoy reading books in a series and are looking for something out of the ordinary.
