Penelope Crumb Is Mad at the Moon

penelopecrumbWritten by Shawn Stout, Illustrated by Valerie Docampo

Fourth grader Penelope Crumb arrives at school dressed as an elephant because it is Be an Animal Day at school. But as soon as she steps inside of the school she knows something is wrong. All of the other kids are dressed normal! She discovers that she has the wrong date, it’s two Mondays from now. Things don’t end there. In gym class they are expected to learn to square dance with the fifth graders and Penelope is mortified that she has to dance with a boy, and not just any boy. It’s with fifth grader Hugo “Lippy” Gordon, who got his nickname “Lippy” because of the beads of sweat that coat his top lip. How can she get out of this, she wonders? She learns from her grandfather that sometimes when he has a problem, he sings to the moon. Penelope likes that idea. After all, she has learned that even though we only see one side of the moon there is more to it than what we see. Could this be what helps her get through her problems?

  1. This sounds like a cute story and I loved the counsel from the grandfather and that there is more to the moon than what we see. Great advice for many things! Thanks Debbie for this review.
