Written by Laura Amy Schlitz
Set in the town of Steeple Chase, Pennsylvania in 1911, a poor farm girl named Joan endures the drudgery imposed upon by her father and brothers. Joan rises up in rebellion against her miserable life to forge a new life in the big city and boards a train with the money her deceased mother sewed inside her favorite childhood doll.
Dressing to pass for 18, Joan assumes the new name of Janet Lovelace and is hired by a wealthy Jewish family as their “hired girl.” As she works and lives with the Rosenbachs, she begins to learn through experience what is required of her if she hopes to become part of a higher class. Recording her triumphs, fears, rejections, and disappointments in her journal, the reader becomes acquainted with this strong and impulsive girl. Beautifully written by Newberry winner Laura Schiltz, this book was a dream to read.
