One year ago Cass died when she drowned in a frozen river. However, she is still alive. Ever since that fateful day, Cass has been able to see and hear ghosts when she crosses the veil into the world of the undead. She does not know why she has this ability, but is looking forward to a ghost-free summer vacation. Her plans suddenly change when Cass learns that her parents are hosting a TV show about the world’s most haunted places and their first stop is Edinburgh, Scotland. While there Cass meets Lara, another girl who can cross the veil, but unlike Cass, who goes sightseeing in the veil, Lara is a ghost hunter. This disturbs Cass because being a ghost hunter involves turning a ghost to ash and she could never do that to her best friend Jacob (who just happens to be a ghost.) On top of this, Cass is being stalked by “The Raven,” an evil version of the pied piper who wants Cass’s soul to live again.
I would not classify this book as horror but rather a spooky adventure story. It is a good read by itself but the author also left some room for a sequel if the book becomes popular.
