Written by Jeanne Zulick Ferruolo
This book is a beautiful representation of a student’s journey to growing up, learning hard things, and becoming their own person. This book beautifully addresses prejudice and how it is based in fear and ignorance, as well as how to address it head on peacefully. It also explores families being different and parents separating from a child’s point of view. This book allows students to explore new perspectives and grow from them.
The structure of this book also lends itself to be a great classroom novel. It uses flashbacks to help tell the story and ties into literature standards regarding how the author moves the story. There are also many amazing opportunities to explore inferences, predictions, and context clues in ways that are meaningful.
