Written by Jessica Kulekjian, Illustrated by Zoe Si
This book is a must for elementary schools! A nonfiction picture book just right for early learners, it’s packed full of information about volcanoes told with fun and colorful illustrations from Pulitzer Prize-nominated cartoonist Zoe Si. Written from the point of view of a volcano, it starts out sleepy but begins to wake up, as it’s magma chamber fills with hot lava. Gasses gurgle, steam spits out, ash begins to spew, and it’s time for a warning! The volcano is awake…..KABOOM!!
All through the book little speech bubbles are filled with interesting facts about the history, science, and geography of volcanoes, which gives this book broad appeal. The story of the volcano as a character is fun for younger students, but the facts will keep older students reading too. There are multiple pages at the back with interesting information, like the phases of volcanoes, the anatomy of a volcano, and common types of volcanoes with real-world examples. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and think my students will too.
