My Lost Freedom: A Japanese American World War II Story

Written by George Takei, Illustrated by Michelle Lee

I love the art in this book. Michelle Lee took a difficult time in George Takei’s life and painted it from what looks like a little boy’s view. just as it is written. The photos and extra information at the end of the book help the reader understand the reality of this painful story. I think elementary age students will find this book interesting and enjoyable and sad. It will educate them about a struggle we had in our nation’s past in a way that is accessible to younger children.
