Sink or Swim

Written by Veronica Agarwal, Illustrated by Lee Durfey-Lavoie

This is a standalone book in the universe of Just Roll With It, with some characters overlapping. After breaking his arm, Ty is struggling with body image issues, which puts a strain on his relationship with his best friend, Max. Their misunderstandings continue as they head to summer camp, where most of the book takes place. Many students will relate to feeling uncomfortable with the shape of their body or dealing with friendship troubles.

I appreciated that it showed well-meaning adults trying to help Ty but getting it wrong, since it teaches kids that sometimes they will have to keep asking to get the support they need. It did feel like the adults could have been more responsive to Ty’s eating struggles. Some of the romance in the book felt thrown in. The artwork of rising water engulfing Ty when he feels overwhelmed by emotions was a helpful visual cue. The book features a diverse group of characters with positive representation for LGBTQIA+ groups, and the writing infuses adults with distinct personalities. Better for older elementary students. The art is fun and colorful.
