Fowl Play

Written by Kristin O’Donnell Tubb

This entertaining middle grade mystery opens at a reading of a last will and testament for Chloe Alvarez’s Uncle Will. Chloe is gifted Will’s African gray parrot, Charlie. In a book filled with likable characters, Charlie might be the most charming of them all. Charlie occasionally squawks out some suspicious phrases, leading Chloe to wonder if her beloved Uncle Will could have been murdered. The ensuing mystery is captivating but not too scary, with plenty of generational family bonding along the way. Despite Chloe grappling with her heavy grief, there is plenty of humor and levity to balance out the emotion. This is definitely an enjoyable read, although the story’s resolution felt a little flat and unfulfilling.
