The Endless Sea

Written by Chi Thai, Illustrated by Linh Dao

This moving picture book would work beautifully as a read-aloud for younger students or as part of a social studies or empathy-focused lesson in grades K–3. It would fit into displays or booklists on topics such as immigration stories, refugee experiences, Asian American voices, or family resilience. Teachers could also use it to spark conversations about displacement, courage, and the meaning of “home.”

The story supports content areas including history, social studies, SEL (social-emotional learning), and cultural awareness. Many collections have limited representation of refugee journeys told for younger children, so this book fills an important need by presenting a real-life refugee experience in a way that is accessible, sensitive, and hopeful.

What makes this book notable is the combination of poetic, spare text and evocative illustrations that capture both fear and beauty. While there are other refugee stories for young readers—such as Stepping Stones: A Refugee Family’s Journey by Margriet Ruurs or The Day War Came by Nicola Davies—Chi Thai’s memoir stands out because it is based on her own lived experience fleeing Vietnam as a child. This personal lens adds depth and authenticity.

The perspective offered here is powerful and unique. For children from refugee or immigrant backgrounds, this book can serve as a “mirror” reflecting their own family histories and struggles. For other students, it provides a “window” into the refugee experience, encouraging empathy and understanding. As Rudine Sims Bishop describes, it also acts as a “sliding glass door”—inviting all readers to imagine themselves in another child’s shoes.

I would strongly recommend that school and public libraries add The Endless Sea to their collections. It is both a work of art and an essential resource for building empathy, honoring diverse voices, and helping young readers understand the courage of refugee families throughout history and today.
