Luz Makes a Splash

Written and Illustrated by Claudia Dávila

It is so hot that Luz thinks her face is going to melt. The city is limiting water and it’s so hot that everyone in the city is about to lose their minds. Luz goes to a friend’s house to see if he wants to go to the pond, and he has the air conditioning on so high that he is wearing a sweater in the house! She wants to swim the pond that her mom used to take her to when she was little. When they get to the pond, it is empty. The plants and animals are dying or dead due to lack of water. Luz finds out that the cola factory is draining all the water from the pond. She is furious!!! She and the people of the town start to conserve water and talk about the pond. A lot of the grownups put the cola factory on blast and hope that helps. Then people in the neighborhood start talking about ways of using gray water to help keep the gardens going. They start finding ways of collecting rain water in barrels. Gray water is healthy for gardens and flowers and shouldn’t be wasted anyway. The cola company is finally ashamed enough to bring the pond back to life and Luz and the community find a lot of wonderful ways to conserve water.
