What a great combination – the author of Duck, Rabbit! and the illustrator of The Dot combine to make a fun book about planting a kiss, and the bliss that arises from it. To be able to tell an interesting story with less than 100 words is a feat. This story has rhyming, repetition, some opposites, and the heroine overcoming doubt. Not bad for a short story. The team of Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Peter H. Reynolds does a marvelous job of telling a magical story of how a girl plants a kiss and shares the results. This book has a lot of really nice linguistic features. Adults will be able to show children the difference between the question and the statement, “planted a kiss.” Intonation matters a lot in this book. Punctuation is very important. Even the font size and style help the book to be successful and friendly. The pictures are fairly minimal making the story feel like it could take place anywhere. The pictures really support the text. This is a very hopeful, happy little book.
