I had wanted to read this book and was not disappointed. Since one of our children had a speech problem, until a good speech therapist intervened, I personally connected with the book. It was informative and very well written. There was some violence in it, which makes it more appropriate for upper grades. Mature readers will really enjoy it. Racism is an underlying theme which is handled in an “this is the way it is” point of view. Perhaps readers today will become more aware of why things stayed the way they were for so long.
