Smokejumpers is well-written and sure to intrigue the curious, risk taking, adrenaline seeking reader. The photographs are excellent and plentiful. Learn all about a specialized group of wild firefighters. There are only about 400 smokejumpers in the USA and of those only about 30 are women. As a smokejumper, you have to be ready to parachute in close to wildfires that are in remote areas where there are no roads; all while trying not to land in a tree or to be blown into the blaze. If you do land in a tree, you may have to rappel down 100 feet!
How do you fancy having to carry 110 pounds of gear whilst hiking 3 miles in 90 minutes? The danger and strain of this job is certainly not for the faint of heart. You will explore some recent wildfires, as well as the training each smokejumper has to do in order to be on the team. Hot, thirsty, and exhausting work; why would anyone want to become one?
There are four other books is the series “Fire Fight! The Bravest”: Aviation Firefighters, City Firefighters, Hotshots, and Marine Firefighters.
