Adventures in Waffles

Adventures with wafflesWritten by Maria Parr, Illustrated by Kate Forrester

Adventures with Waffles is a fun adventure book in the everyday lives of Lena and Trille, who happen to be growing up in current day Norway. Lena is bold and adventurous, and Trille follows her into numerous escapades. It reminds me a little bit of Junie B Jones. They pull crazy stunts, deal with serious issues like the loss of a family member and enjoy Auntie Granny’s waffles now and again. The author shares everything through Trille’s eyes and emotions in a fun yet tender way. I found myself laughing at their antics and caring about their sorrows but the story didn’t way me down. I particularly enjoyed how it showed life in Norway which very similar to living here in the US while at the same time subtly sharing things like traditions that are unique to their culture. It was published in 2005 but translated into English in 2013. I highly recommend this book for your library.

I love a book that is set in another place – not only do you get a good story but you learn something new about cultures, geography, language — all kinds of things! I’m glad to know about this book.

  2. I’m currently reading this book and I’m loving it. Funny and yet filled with some tender emotions.
