Civil war time. Catrina feels she is responsible for her mother’s death because she is bored and not paying attention, spooks the mule who is turning the big wheel that crushes the cane. Her mother gets hit by the spoke of the wheel and falls dead from a head wound. Catrina falls in love with a strange man she finds wandering naked in her fields. He has a fever and has drawn some strange circles in the cane fields. People accuse him of being the devil. The war has started and people are taking sides. Catrina’s brother announces his upcoming marriage, and his enlistment in the army. Her father becomes ill and she gets sick. very interesting read. I enjoyed the book.
