Juana & Lucas

Written and Illustrated by Juana Medina

This story is cute for those who are curious what other countries are like. Juana lives in Bogota, Columbia and she likes to play with her friends, especially her dog Lucas, eat Brussels Sprouts, and to draw. She doesn’t like itchy clothes or math problems–something I think a lot of kids can relate to. There are lots of Spanish words thrown in to make the story authentic. One day in school, her class is told that they are going to start learning English! The author does an amazing job at showing how trying it is to learn a new language. Even though Juana wants to give up, she keeps on trying and pushes through. Will something amazing happen now that she’s learning another language?

The illustrations are really engaging and even though there’s a lot of text on the pages, it was a fairly quick read.
