Sweet story of 12 year old Rose, a gifted cellist, who learns that life does not always go as planned. She finds unlikely friends in her diverse neighborhood and community that support and help her as her life changes after an accident. Students interested in classical music and gardening will find particular interest in Giant Pumpkin. It is rather long, over 400 pages, which could deter some students from reading it. Overall, it is a nice addition to any elementary or junior high library collection.
