Dear America: The Story of an Undocumented Citizen

Young Readers’ Edition

Written by Jose Antonio Vargas

What does it mean to be an American? In this book, Jose Antonio Vargas describes his journey to define that word for himself. His discovery began as an immigrant who was unaware of his illegal status until he went to apply for a learners’ permit at age 16. What seems to be a terrible thing for so many people in our country, undocumented immigration, is described as a normal path for children who are brought here by family members. Even though he doesn’t have the legal paperwork to call himself an American, Jose Antonio Vargas feels American and this is his story. You will definitely think differently about what it means to be an American after reading this book. Well written!
