Alice Across America

The Story of the First Women’s Cross-Country Road Trip

Written by Sarah Glenn Marsh, Illustrated by Gilbert Ford

Alice Ramsey loved driving, so when asked by a car maker to drive from New York to California to prove that their new car was so easy to operate even a woman could drive it, Alice was up for the challenge. She accepted the challenge in part because she loved to drive but also to show that women were capable of doing so much more than most men thought they could back then. Presented in picture book form with bright, colorful illustrations, this book is Alice’s story of the nearly 4,000 mile journey she took across America in 1909.
