After the Worst Thing Happens

Written by Audrey Vernick

This is a bittersweet story about a girl, Army Morand, who dearly loves her dog, Maybe. Early on in the book, her dog dies. Not only does Army face the loss of her beloved dog, but she is dealing with the guilt of inadvertently contributing to his death. Army’s loss is almost unbearable, but she soon learns that the best way to overcome her grief is to reach outward by helping and befriending others. Our heroine, Army, becomes the voice and thoughts of tweens in this story. Although this book is written for a younger audience, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it as an adult too.
