Who Was Duke Ellington?

Written by M.D. Payne, Illustrated by Gregory Copeland

Like all of the books in the “Who Was?/Who Is?” series, this is a middle elementary level biography with insert pages that give historical context as well as vocabulary explanations. The life of Duke Ellington is fascinating and hopefully will lead children to YouTube to hear some of his timeless music. A musical performer, composer and all-around entertainer, Ellington was made in a way that is not available to young people today. His motivation and dedication can serve as inspiration to anyone who is not familiar with his story.
