Africa, Amazing Africa: Country by Country

Written by Atinuke, Illustrated by Mouni Feddag

Africa, Amazing Africa is just the book I was looking for to add to my library. This colorful, descriptive book takes the diversity of the African continent and gives amazing facts about all fifty-five countries. The author breaks the countries into Southern, East, West, Central and North Africa and gives descriptions of languages, flora and fauna, people, and traditions. There are also sections on African religions, hairstyles, and football. The illustrations are bright and fun, filled with maps, colorful people and a plethora of animals. Each country has a paragraph or two that describes the country, but some of my favorite parts of the book are the bullet points containing such random interesting tidbits like: there are more pyramids in Sudan then there are in Egypt, adult male gorillas are over 6 feet tall and know how to open poachers’ traps to rescue their loved ones, and that the world famous biologist Ameena Gurib became the first woman president of Maurituas.

I am excited to share this book with my elementary library kids as I think they will find it to be a fun, informative read, especially the ones whose families are from Africa.
