Words To Make A Friend

A Story in Japanese and English

Written by Donna Jo Napoli, Illustrated by Naoko Stoop

I love the art in this book! Words to Make a Friend shows two young girls from different cultures becoming friends by sharing experiences such as creating a snowman and crafting origami together. One of them will share a word to describe what they’re seeing, doing, or how they’re feeling in their language, while the other will do the same (translate the word) in their language of English or Japanese. There are few words throughout the book and even a few pages that don’t have words, giving readers a chance to use their imagination to tell the story using the pictures. I gave it a younger age reading level because of this. Darling book!
