Written by Kate McMullan, Illustrated by Alison Friend
A classroom plants a tree and watches all the wildlife that lives in the tree together. There is a robin with eggs in a nest; a squirrel with her kits; a hawk circling overhead; the blue jays scaring the hawk; a lizard, a spider, a walking stick, and a snail. There is a whole ecosystem alive in this tree for the children to watch and observe. (Not sure how they went from planting a small tree to observing a large, mature tree, but it doesn’t distract too much from the story.) In the tradition of “This is the House That Jack Built,” the story adds and repeats as animals join the tree. This would be a great read aloud for Earth Day, spring, or units on ecology.
