The Mystery of the Monarchs

Written by Barb Rosenstock, Illustrated by Erika Meza

As a child, Fred Urquhart loved bugs and insects and was fascinated by them. When he read an article about migrating butterflies and how they arrived north in the spring but disappeared before winter, he wondered, “Where do the monarchs go?” No one knew and no one had ever seen millions of monarchs in the winter. Not knowing beforehand that it would take almost fifty years, it was a mystery that Fred was determined to solve. With the help of his wife and people from all over The United States, Canada, and Mexico, including kids and teachers, they were able to tag and track hundreds of thousands of monarchs to their migrating location.I thought it was interesting to learn that for many years no one knew where the butterflies were going and that such a delicate insect so small could migrate as far as they do. I always love when an author includes facts about the story at the end of a book, and this one did not disappoint.
