The Girl Who Built an Ocean

An Artist, an Argonaut, and the True Story of the World’s First Aquarium

Written by Jess Keating, Illustrated by Michelle Mee Nutter

This book tells the story of Jeanne Villepreux– the first person to create an aquarium and “bring the ocean to us.” After moving closer to the ocean, Jeanne became fascinated with ocean life. She wanted to study it more closely, so she created the first aquarium. While she did study many oceanic creatures, the one she spent the most time observing was the Argonaut. Through her observations, she made incredible findings that led to resolution of multiple scientific mysteries. I had never heard this story and so I was thoroughly impressed with Jeanne! What a cool addition to the library that shows kids that they can do anything they set their mind to!
