Scout is Not a Band Kid

Written and Illustrated by Jade Armstrong

This is a cute story of a young student who joins the school band in order to go on their big trip but ends up with a love for the trombone, new friends, and a lesson on what friendship should look like. While not a difficult read, it is too advanced for elementary schools. With words such as “quintessential” and “reverie,” this book seems more for junior high and high school aged students. There is a nice amount of natural diversity in the book in both aspects of race and gender identity.
