Leeva at Last

Written by Sara Pennypacker, Illustrated by Matthew Cordell

This book is about a neglected child who has the question, “What are people for?” Her parents are the mayor and treasurer of the city she lives in. She has to sneak out of the house, and she finds a library next to her home. She meets the librarian and the librarian’s nephew and befriends them. She has many adventures and transforms her community in surprising ways while she is trying to find the answer to her question.

This book has parellels with Matilda, The Willoughbys, and A Series of Unfortunate Events.

This would be a good read aloud book.
