The Lost Whale

Written by Hannah Gold

The Lost Whale caught my eye on the review cart as I had planned a whale watching tour on the San Juan Islands in June. This book did not disappoint. It is touching and educational. My only wish is that I would have read it before my trip.

Rio is sent to live with his grandmother in California after his mother falls ill. Alone and struggling to accept his new home, Rio meets Marina while walking along the nearby beach. Marina invites Rio whale watching. The healing power of the ocean brings him new purpose as he searches for the whale his mother adored when she was a child.

This story will raise awareness in its readers on the importance of taking care of the earth, especially our delicate oceans. With the recent deaths of many Gray Whales it is a timely message. A beautiful and powerful animal adventure story which also highlights the struggles young people face while caring for a parent.
