Up and Adam

Written by Debbie Zapata, Illustrated by Yong Ling Kang

Up and Adam is a sweet story about a young boy, Adam, and his dog named Up. Adam hears a call to action from the local mayor after a storm. They head out into their community and help clear debris, fix a birdhouse, and pass out cookies, all with Adam’s positive attitude and infectious smile.

I appreciate that this story is about a child with Downs Syndrome which does not focus on his disability. It is a positive book that creates empathy, a sense of community, and service. Upon finishing the story, one learns from the back matter that it was inspired by the author’s son. This would be a great book for any school library, especially one that practices inclusion with students of special needs.
