Beatrice and Barb

Written by Kate Jenks Landry, Illustrated by Vivian Mineker

Kate Jenks Landry’s book Beatrice and Barb is a wonderful story about a young girl asking for a pet, any pet, and the pet she finally gets is SOOO unusual! A Venus flytrap! An awesome story for those with allergies or those who just cannot get the usual pet. The messages throughout are of compromising, determination, persistence, and thoughtfulness, making this a perfect story for all ages. When Beatrice waters her new friend Barb every morning and something still goes wrong, the story gives readers a chance to talk about the unique needs of different living things (what is just right for one thing, may not be good for another). In the end Beatrice learns specifically what her pet needs to survive (thanks to the right specialist), and she and Barb take care of each other!

Illustrated by Vivian Mineker, each layout is full of simple and chunky details with bright earthy tones that are just right to bring Beatrice and Barb’s adventures to life.
