Milloo’s Mind

The Story of Maryam Faruqi, Trailblazer for Women’s Education

Written by Reem Faruqi, Illustrated by Hoda Hadadi

I absolutely loved this book! It’s the true story of Maryam Faruqi, who grew up in India (now Pakistan) back in the 1930s and 40s. Back then many girls didn’t go to school. She not only fought for her own education but founded Happy Home schools, which are thriving today. The illustrations are beautiful, all done in paper collage on a white background, which makes the colors pop. Some illustrations are done in tissue paper collage that are painted, so it gives a cool transparent effect.

Loved this book! The word count isn’t too high, and there are repetitive phrases that would make this a good choice for younger and older elementary audiences.
