Treasure Island: Runaway Gold

Written by Jewell Parker Rhodes

Zane is a great character and the idea of this book is really interesting. The history of slavery in New York is not something that we, as Americans, talk a lot about and this book opened my eyes. The Underground Railroad history is fascinating and the comparison between sailing and skateboarding was a lot of fun. For some reason, I had a hard time finishing it. The story seems to stop and start with pauses of conversation which I think made it hard to want to keep reading. I also struggled believing the relationships between Zane, Jack, and Kiko. Once I finished it, I was glad I did. It makes me want to understand more of what happened with slavery in New York.
