Jackie Ormes Draws the Future

The Remarkable Life of a Pioneering Cartoonist

Written and Illustrated by Liz Montague

This book started off great but ended in a fairly disappointing way. For the majority of the book, we get to see Jackie Ormes find her talent in drawing and work her way to various newspapers and other media outlets, spreading the news about the world at that time. She faced challenges but found great success in what she did. What really turned me off from this book was how, at the end, when we are just beginning to talk about a cartoon that she purposely made to help in the Civil Rights movement, the book ends with a “and she tried to help the world.” Did she finish the cartoon? Did it help? What was it like? It was as if we were left on a cliffhanger that had me flipping back a few pages to see if I had missed something. Great start; not a great finish.
