Make Way

The Story of Robert McCloskey, Nancy Schon, and Some Very Famous Ducklings

Written by Angela Burke Kunkel, Illustrated by Claire Keane

I loved this book! It’s about the 1942 Caldecott Medal-winning book Make Way For Ducklings by Robert McClosky. And it’s also about the artist, Nancy Schon, who sculpted the ducks from the book that now reside in Boston Public Gardens. The illustrations are beautiful! They look like pastels in a limited color palette of browns, blues, greens, and orange. I learned that Nancy kept looking for an art commission even after getting 156 rejections. And ever since the statues were installed in 1987, they have become a Boston icon. Loved this book! Very well done. I’d say for grades 1-5.
