This is a fictionalized account of the life and story of the famous poet Phillis Wheatley, based on the facts of her life and told from her point of view. Phillis was born to a family of African storytellers. She was captured by slave raiders and forced onto a slave ship bound for the United States. She was purchased by a kind family who taught her how to read and write. Her mistress recognizes her talent for poetry and arranges for her to share her poetry with others in the Boston area. Her fame quickly spreads and provides opportunities that lead to her gaining her freedom.
