Written and illustrated by Lauren Redniss
The illustrations in this book are quite genius! Lauren Redniss uses color to tell the story of a heatwave in a city. The only colors in the first half are red and shades of black. The first half tells the story of how hot it is in the city. The red is so uncomfortably bright, that you feel the discomfort of the heatwave. Then a drop of rain comes and introduces the color blue. Lauren Redniss does an excellent job of conveying emotion and temperature through color. I’m gonna be honest though–I don’t really like her style of drawing people’s faces. They’re not that pleasant to look at. But other than that a great book! For grades K-3.
