I Am Osage

How Clarence Tinker Became the First Native American Major General

Written by Kim Rogers, Illustrated by Bobby Von Martin

This is the story of Clarence Tinker, the highest-ranking Native American who became a major general in the US Army. Clarence was born in 1887 in Kansas. Always proud of his Osage heritage, Clarence was repeatedly told to forget his native traditions while attending Indian boarding schools. But he never let go of his identity. After his time at a military academy in Missouri, Clarence was recommended for the army. Though he faced many instances of prejudice at a time when Native Americans were not even US citizens, Clarence graduated and went on to become a pilot with the Army Air corp shortly after WWI, commanding many bomber units in the 1930s. Through acts of bravery and leadership, Clarence rose in rank until he was promoted to major general in 1942. Known as a kind-hearted gentleman, Clarence treated his men with great respect, learning their names and details about their families. Sadly, Clarence died in the Battle of Midway nearly 5 months after his promotion. Every June since his death, the Osage people sing a drum song they wrote in his honor and Tinker Air Force base in Oklahoma is named after him.

This is an excellent picture book biography with captivating illustrations. Students who like books about military service, WWI, WWII, and Native American heritage will enjoy this one. There is an author’s note at the back which describes Kim Rogers’ own experience coming to terms with her Osage heritage and the inspiration behind her book. A timeline of Osage/Wichita history is blended with Clarence Tinker’s life.
