Written and Illustrated by Ed Vere
This is a story about Gabriel the Elephant, who reflects on his life. He always wanted to be part of the lifeboat crew out at sea, but he was told he was too little…and then too big. Even though he’s disappointed, he sets out to live his dream and builds his own lifeboat and ends up saving the day. If you’re expecting something similar to The Old Man and the Sea, this isn’t it. But the illustrations are great. There’s a cardboard texture underneath the the pastel and paint. The author, Ed Vere, set the story in Cornwall where he grew up. He met Gabriel in the village, and the book is the story of his life, although I’m not sure what is true and what isn’t. I’d recommend for grades K-3.
