Tokyo Night Parade

Written by J. P. Takahashi, Illustrated by Minako Tomigahara

I loved this book! Tokyo Night Parade is a fascinating look into Japanese culture and imagination where a little girl named Eka has to move to New York, but is visiting Japan for what could be the last time. The Night Parade or the Night of One Hundred Demons is the one night of the year when the mythical Japanese creatures come out for a parade. I liked how the author incorporates some Japanese words, but it’s not overboard. And I love the idea of “there are no easy answers”–the author doesn’t give the answer, but let’s the reader try to figure it out. And the illustrator’s use of light and dark and color using gouache, woodblock printing, and paper scraps is phenomenal!
