The Firelight Apprentice

Written and Illustrated by Bree Paulsen

A fantasy graphic novel, The Firelight Apprentice is by the creator of Garlic and the Vampire, a recent Beehive Book nominee. This story is darker, with themes of war and loss, yet the strong sister relationship shines through. The artwork is still great, although I did miss those adorable anthropomorphized vegetables.

Sisters Ada and Safi live with their ill father since their mom was killed in a recent war. They help him run his lightbulb store. Safi is starting to show flashes of magic, and eventually Ada allows Safi to move away and apprentice with magicians. Fun plot twists at the end, as not all the characters are who you think. My third grade son thought the book was a little scary.
