Rica Baptista: A week of Shenanigans

Written by Janet Costa Bates, Illustrated by Gladys Jose

This book is about a girl looking forward to her yearly traditional week with Grandpa, but that looks a little different this year. Rica has to be flexible and use her imagination to think up a week that will be memorable. She realizes it doesn’t matter what her and Grandpa do together, but the connection and time itself. This book included so many little life lessons, like being flexible and resilient, appreciating your culture and extended family, knowing where you came from, and just enjoying the time you have with the people around you. I loved the snippets of diversity and culture weaved in, and also great to see a person of color as the main character.
