This book is a go-to for historical fiction and dim sum lovers. It has the tiniest touch of magic and a dual timeline narrative. The story follows a boy, Han Yu, in ancient China and a girl, Luli, in 1931 Chinatown, NYC. Each of the protagonists are on a courageous, exciting, and a harrowing quest to save their family.
This story is impeccably researched and illuminating in the cultural parallels it draws between the two time periods. It is filled with mouthwatering descriptions of steamed buns, and a timely homage to the richness of its diverse communities.
I just hugged this book when I finished it. I thought about giving it 4.5 stars because of its length and concern that my students would not finish it. I then realized, how could I do this to such a fine piece of literature. It is time for this librarian to teach my fourth and fifth graders to be resilient readers and to empower them with the ability to enjoy a book that has more words than pictures.
