In 2032, everyone is chipped and tracked. Without a chip, you can’t even go grocery shopping. 16-year-old Colombian immigrant Vali, her little brother, and her mother’s future depends on a black-market chip. Living as unchipped in small-town Vermont, things go awry when Vali’s mother’s chip malfunctions. Running from the Deportation Force, their only hope is to make it to Vali’s aunt’s house in California. Can they succeed?
The plot is well-written and engaging. The characters are well-developed and are easy to connect with. With unflinching honesty and real-world parallels, this political adventure will appeal to many middle school and high school readers.
