Fall Down Seven Times, Stand up Eight

Patsy Takemoto Mink and the Fight for Title IX

Written by Jen Bryant, Illustrated by Toshiki Nakamura

Catchy title and a great message for all to read. This picture book biography is the story of Patsy Takemoto Mink. Using the proverb as a title, the story begins with her childhood and how her parents taught her hands on and by example. It depicts how Patsy came back from heartbreaking losses again and again. Medical schools wouldn’t accept her? Then she’d go to law school. Law firms wouldn’t hire her? Then she’d open her own. Politicians said someone like her would never make it to Congress? She’d prove them wrong. As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives she helped pass a law enabling all people in the United States an education no matter their sex. It passed and Title IX (nine) became a law. This book has an inspiring message of the good one can do by never giving up.
