Dr. Mae Jemison, Brave Rocketeer

VIP: Very Important People

Written by Heather Alexander

This is a really fun book for anyone who loves STEM. It is a great source of historical information and the culture that shaped the dreams of young girls in the 1960s and 70s. Filled with informational inserts that explain unfamiliar parts of the story, this is a great teaching tool for those who are fascinated with history. The story of Dr. Jemison is one of overcoming prejudices and societal norms through hard work, determination and sheer grit. It makes a perfect companion to the picture book Mae Among the Stars by Roda Ahmed. I would suggest reading the picture book aloud and then recommending this one for those who want to know more. As a woman, I learned a lot about how far we’ve come in the last 50 years.
