To Boldly Go

How Nichelle Nichols and Star Trek Helped Advance Civil Rights

Written by Angela Dalton, Illustrated by Lauren Semmer

Representation on TV was something black people had so little of in important roles. Nichelle Nichols changed that when she helped create and mold the character of Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek in the 1960s. She was seen as an intellectual equal in space while black people were anything but treated equally in the real world. This book shows the benefits of Nichelle Nichols’ mere presence on Star Trek. It shares lots of interesting facts about her life and what was going on in the Civil Rights Movement at the time that Star Trek was on TV. I really enjoyed learning about her background and understanding more of the important role she played in representing black people in a positive way to the rest of the world.
